The intuition is hard to argue with. Each application is a chance. More applications, more chances. If one in fifty applications leads to an interview, then a hundred applications should lead to two, and you cannot get there without sending the hundred.

The intuition is a lottery model, and it is wrong about job applications in one specific way: lottery tickets have fixed odds, and applications do not. The odds of an application depend on what it was and how it was made — and both degrade as volume rises. Past a certain point, sending more lowers the total.

This guide is the arithmetic behind the Apply / Adapt / Skip method's insistence on verdicts before volume.

The model

Let each application i have some probability pᵢ of producing an interview. Your expected number of interviews for the week is the sum of the pᵢ — not the count of applications, and not the count times some average.

What sets pᵢ? Three things the method already names:

  • The verdict. A SKIP sent anyway has p close to zero: a gatekeeper is missing or the posting is not live. An APPLY has whatever odds its visible fit earns. An ADAPT has real odds if the gap is closed, and SKIP-like odds if it is not.
  • The time it received. An ADAPT given its hour is a different application from the same ADAPT given fifteen minutes.
  • Its context. An application at a company where you sent four others that week is read differently from one sent alone.

The lottery model assumes p is constant. It is not; it is a function of how many you send, and it falls as the count rises.

Two weeks, same six hours (illustrative)

Week A — volume. Twenty postings reviewed, twenty sent. Six hours across twenty applications is eighteen minutes each. Suppose the verdicts, had anyone run them, were four APPLY, four ADAPT, twelve SKIP.

  • Twelve SKIPs at roughly zero.
  • Four APPLYs at their normal odds — call each one a.
  • Four ADAPTs, each given eighteen minutes: the gap is unclosed, so each has roughly SKIP odds.

Expected interviews: about 4a.

Week B — verdicts. Same twenty postings reviewed, five minutes each. The twelve SKIPs are stopped at the verdict. Four APPLYs sent as-is in an hour. Three ADAPTs done properly in the remaining time, each given its hour; the fourth held for next week. Suppose a properly made ADAPT has odds comparable to an APPLY — call it a as well.

Expected interviews: about 4a + 3a = 7a.

Week B sent seven applications and Week A sent twenty, and Week B's expected interviews are higher by most of a factor of two. The gap comes entirely from the three ADAPTs that got their hour. Everything else was either zero in both weeks or identical.

The lesson is not that seven is the right number. It is that the thirteen extra sends in Week A contributed nothing, and cost the time that would have made three applications work.

The four mechanisms

1. Time per application falls. Hours are fixed. Every additional send is subtracted from the ones that needed the time — and the ones that needed it are precisely the ADAPTs, the applications with the most odds to lose. Volume does not spread risk; it starves the best applications to feed the worst.

2. SKIPs enter at zero. A posting with a missing gatekeeper, a stale requisition, or an internal candidate contributes nothing whatever the count. In a volume strategy these are most of the count. Ghost jobs and internal-candidate postings covers the ones that look most like real chances.

3. Duplicates hurt each other. Five applications to five roles at one company, in one week, are read together by one recruiter, and they read as a candidate who does not know what they want. Each lowers the others. Applying to the same company twice has the rules.

4. Noise destroys learning. A search is also an experiment. If every application is a rushed send, an outcome tells you nothing: the rejection could be the posting, the fit, the resume, the level, or the fifteen minutes. If every application carries a verdict and got its time, an outcome is a data point — ADAPTs are not converting, therefore the resume or level read is wrong — and the search improves. Volume makes the search unimprovable.

What "more chances" actually requires

The intuition is right about one thing: more real chances would help. The way to get them is not to send more of the same postings; it is to raise the supply of postings that pass the verdict. Widen one search filter at a time and re-run verdicts. Fix the master resume once so that hidden fit stops reading as no fit. Pursue the referral that turns a marginal core-fit SKIP into a readable application. Each of these adds applications with real p; a volume target adds applications with none.

FAQ

But some people get hired from mass applications. Doesn't that prove it works?

It proves that among a very large number of near-zero odds, something occasionally lands, at the cost of hundreds of hours. The same hours spent on verdicts and proper ADAPTs would have produced more, sooner — and would have taught the candidate something about which applications were working.

Isn't a rushed ADAPT still better than not applying?

Only slightly, and it costs a posting. A rushed ADAPT sent this week is a posting you cannot apply to properly next week. Holding it and doing it right is usually the better bet.

What about roles where the odds are low regardless — do I just skip them?

Low odds are not zero odds. The method skips postings whose odds are near zero because of something you cannot change: a gatekeeper, a dead requisition. A genuine long shot with a real verdict is a legitimate APPLY at fifteen minutes.

How do I know if I'm past the crossover?

If you are sending applications you would not defend at interview — postings you could not say why you fit — you are past it. The verdict test is the practical version: if you cannot name the verdict and its reasons, you are spraying.
